RealDID: China’s Breakthrough in Real-Name Decentralized Identity

China’s Blockchain Service Network (BSN) has launched RealDID, a national-level decentralized identity system that aims to verify the real-name identities of China’s 1.4 billion citizens.

This is the world’s first real-name decentralized identity system, and it marks a breakthrough in blockchain technology and its applications.

RealDID was unveiled on December 12 in Beijing, as a result of a collaboration between the National Information Center, the Ministry of Public Security, China Mobile Communications Group, Beijing Zhongdun Anxin Technology Development, and the BSN Development Alliance.

RealDID will allow users to register and log in to websites anonymously, using Decentralized Identity (DID) addresses and private keys.

This movement will ensure the separation of business data and transactions from personal information, addressing the concerns of privacy and security in identity verification.

RealDID will also offer a range of services, such as real-name confirmation, data encryption flow, privacy protection login, custom business DID, identity certificate services, and personal identity information authentication services.

They will enable users to control their digital identity and personal information and to disclose only the necessary information to different business platforms.

RealDID is expected to have significant implications for social media platforms, which have recently imposed requirements on content creators to disclose their real names or the names of their financial backers.

This decentralized system is also part of BSN’s operations and global reach, which includes BSN China and BSN Global.

BSN China, managed by the National Information Center in collaboration with tech giants China Mobile and China UnionPay, oversees domestic operations. BSN Global, on the other hand, operates independently, managing international operations with its own set of security measures.

This dual approach positions BSN as a comprehensive and secure blockchain infrastructure.

The launch of RealDID signifies a historic moment in the global blockchain landscape, marking China’s commitment to pioneering advancements in blockchain technology and its applications.

It also showcases the potential of blockchain technology to revolutionize identity verification and management, especially in the context of web3 advancement, where distributed applications and multi-party collaborations are becoming increasingly prevalent.

The launch of RealDID comes amidst the global landscape of trade sanctions, where US lawmakers recently introduced a bill to restrict federal government officials from engaging with China-based blockchain firms.

However, an interesting development unfolded as China’s Institute of Forensic Science, under the Ministry of Public Security, has been removed from the US trade sanctions list.

With RealDID, China’s DID system, the convergence of blockchain and digital identity opens doors to a new era of digital identity, where users can enjoy the benefits of anonymity, privacy, security, and control.
