Square Enix, the Japanese video game giant behind popular franchises such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, is entering the blockchain gaming space with its first original Ethereum NFT game “Symbiogenesis“.
The company has announced the auction dates for the NFTs that will be featured in the game, which is set to launch on December 21.
Symbiogenesis is a narrative-driven digital collectible art project that integrates characters, items, and other assets as Ethereum NFTs.
The game will utilize the Polygon scaling network to reduce transaction costs and improve user experience.
According to the game’s website, Symbiogenesis is “a story of a world where humans and machines coexist in harmony, and where the boundaries between reality and virtuality are blurred.”
The auction for the Symbiogenesis NFTs will take place in three phases, starting from November 27.
The first phase will include 10 character NFTs and will be open only to early investors or “stakeholders”.
The second phase will offer 90-character NFTs and will be available to the top 50 participants of an allowlist entry campaign, as well as 40 randomly selected participants from the 51st to 300th rank.
The third phase will showcase 400 NFTs and will be accessible to the rest of the allowlist members.
The allowlist entry campaign, which ran from November 7 to 21, involved a series of quizzes and a treasure hunt within a prototype version of the Symbiogenesis game world.
The participants earned NFT “relics” and points that determined their eligibility for the auction phases.
The auction process will also have a unique twist: the NFTs will be offered for free to the allowlist members, but if there is more than one claimant for a specific NFT, it will then be auctioned to the highest bidder.
Square Enix is one of the first major video game publishers to embrace blockchain gaming and NFTs.
The company previously launched Final Fantasy NFT trading cards in March and partnered with web3 infrastructure provider Elixir in April.
With Symbiogenesis, Square Enix aims to create a new form of entertainment that combines storytelling, art, and blockchain technology.
